Sandra Kelly
Interior III. 2020.
Acrylic.
The painting was exhibited as part of the South Canterbury Art Societies annual exhibition (South Canterbury Art Society’s 68th exhibition) and won a highly commended award. The society celebrated 125 years. The Friends and community apprecate the legacy of art gifted by the society. They started collecting artworks in 1910 for a public collection and their gift became the nucleus of the Aigantighe's permanent collection.
To honour the anniversary, the Friends purchased the painting to gift to the Aigantighe collection.
Aigantighe manager Cara Fitzgerald said a collection policy guided their decision making on what artworks to add. She said the policy included criteria such as responsible stewardship and sharing through public access. Interior 3, the third in a series by Timaru artist Sandra Kelly. “Sandra Kelly has been painting for over 60 years and her work fits our policy criteria. Her interior scene art work will also complement what is already in our collection. “Kelly is a local Timaru artist and was not previously represented in our collection. We are delighted to receive this gift from the Friends and represent Kelly in our collection.”
