Grateful Rocks

How about painting a rock as a gift?

"I was having trouble sleeping because I was too stressed and couldn’t relax. A 30 min painting session as part of my wind down routine made a massive difference to my sleep, and energy levels the next day. I wanted to make more meaningful rocks that would create a bit more happiness, so we made a heap of thank you rocks and gave them to local not for profit organisations that we were grateful for. We made mothers day rocks. And we made some "your heart rocks" to give as a thank you to those who supported a local Heart Foundation fundraiser. Next we made rocks to thank those who supported a breast cancer fundraiser. Then in June 2017 we made a giant peace symbol made of over 400 painted rocks with thank you messages to celebrate 30 years nuclear free, and to thank all those who helped New Zealand get us there. Photos and video's of what we made even found their was to the UN Secretary General's Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters, as a wonderful, creative, grassroots example of Disarmament Education and Gratefulness. It was fair to say I felt great and I think my shift in thinking has done a world of good not just for my head space but hopefully a nice gift to others too." - Roselyn Fauth

As well as a fun activity to paint a grateful rock, and to make someones day when they find it, there are also lots of being grateful.

  • It helps you to be in the present by noticing what you do have and stopping to acknowledge it. This can be the company of a person, having food, or even being able to see.
  • It has the power to change your mood almost instantly from negative to positive. Good feelings and positive energy arise when you start acknowledging what you are grateful for.
  • It makes us happier and reduces feelings of envy, makes our memories happier, lets us experience good feelings, and helps us bounce back from stress. It is is strongly correlated with optimism. Optimism in turn makes us happier, improves our health, and has been shown to increase lifespan by as much as a few years.
  • And event increases sleep quality. Gratitude and positive emotion in general are among the strongest relaxants known to man.

So have a think about what you are grateful for, give your kids the challenge, and make someones day.
